Homework help!

Your teacher probably won’t set you too much homework, but if they do it’s best to do it as soon as you can while everything is still fresh in your mind. Even if they don’t set any why not do a little bit yourself everyday by going through your word book.

If you’re finding it hard to motivate yourself to do your language homework have a look through these Help! titles and find the one that matches how you’re feeling, read the tips and see if you can push yourself to do that homework.

Help! I can’t get started...

Make sure you have a little break before starting your homework. You don’t want to start it straight away after a long day at School. A good time to do homework is when you feel refreshed.

Help! I can’t concentrate...

Make sure there are no distractions around you. Sit in a quiet area that is tidy so you know that you are able to work. Let your parent/brother/sister/dog know that you’re doing your homework and don’t want to be disturbed (that said, you must actually do your homework and not sit there playing games or watching TV!) Take a little break every 30 minutes - have a drink or walk around, you’ll find it much easier to work if you split the homework up into manageable chunks.

Help! I don’t know how to do my homework...

Make sure you write down exactly what you need to do when your teacher gives it to you, eg what you have to include, how many words, what pages and exercises you have to complete, or anything that you need to search for online. You won't be able to remember all your homework tasks off the top of your head when you get home. If you have copied your homework down correctly but are still not exactly sure what you have to do then ask a someone else to help explain it to you or have a break and come back to it with a fresh mind to see if you can make more sense of it. Have a look back at your language text book to help find the answers or on the Internet to see if that helps; this isn’t cheating, it’s just using common sense!

Help! I don’t have time for my homework...

Socialising and hobbies are extremely important, but so is your homework. Include time for your homework in your daily routine so it feels a normal part of it, not something you have to make specific time for or a chore. By having this window of time every day there’s no reason not to be able to do it. You can even arrange it with your friends to all do it at the same time and then you’ll all be free together afterwards too!

Help! I don’t know what order to do it in...

Create a homework planner to keep you on top of all your homework. Write in what time you’re going to do each piece of homework and the order to do it in. This will make it much more organized and take you less time to complete it. Don’t forget to include when you are going to take breaks and to tick it off when you’ve finished it!

Help! I’ve got too much to do...

Take small steps at a time. When it comes to your homework don't tackle everything all at once, being organised is a life saver as you can sort your homework into what needs doing first.

Help! I don’t want to do my homework...

It is hard to find the motivation to do your homework after a long day at school, but in the long run you’re much better off just doing it. Homework is an extra part of your learning that you do by yourself so you can really see how much you’ve learnt and how to use what you've learnt when you’re by yourself. If you get in the habit of doing your homework it’ll become much less of a pain. If you still don’t want to do it, try rewarding yourself once you've completed it, so you have a goal to work towards. You could allow yourself to watch a TV show, play a computer game, go out with friends or eat some chocolate...whatever you fancy after working hard and finishing your homework.
